At one point, the Organians, the superior race of beings who stopped the last war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire as seen in the original series episode "Errand of Mercy" are mentioned. This incident leads to the threat of a new war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Before she died, she claims to Kirk that even though they could see weapons fire from the sky, they couldn't see the attacking ships, foreshadowing the Klingon Bird-of-Prey that can fire while cloaked. When Kirk learns of the attack, he goes to see Carol in the ICU and is with her when she dies. Carol Marcus, Kirk's love interest in Зоряний шлях II: Гнів Хана (1982) and the mother of Kirk's son, David.

In the movie tie in novel, the story originally opened with a Starfleet colony being attacked near the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone border. In addition, Gene Roddenberry was long opposed to such crossovers between Зоряний шлях (1966) and The Next Generation, even though Bones had already appeared in Зоряний шлях: Наступне покоління: Encounter at Farpoint (1987) at Roddenberry's insistence, and Spock's father Sarek appeared in Зоряний шлях: Наступне покоління: Sarek (1990) (when Roddenberry's personal involvement with TNG was decreasing). At the time however, The Next Generation was still in the midst of its run on television, and Paramount had no plans to transition this to a film series, or give any impression of such. Cattrall also designed her own hairstyle for the role of Valeris, and also came up with the idea to completely shave off her sideburns in order to more prominently show her Vulcan ears.īeing the last film focusing solely on the original Star Trek cast and characters, there was early consideration to feature Captain Picard from Зоряний шлях: Наступне покоління (1987) in the story. Upon finding out she was to play a new character, she agreed. She initially turned down the role of Valeris, thinking she was to play Saavik. Cattrall wanted to play a different character rather than be the third incarnation of Saavik, following Kirstie Alley and Robin Curtis. Roddenberry won the dispute and the character was rewritten into Valeris, who is played by Kim Cattrall. However, Gene Roddenberry objected to the character's actions, ending up in a battle with Nicholas Meyer (who believed the character Saavik was his to do with as he pleased).
